Junior RE Conference Days

Promotes dialogue between young people of differing faiths and secular backgrounds and cultures, supporting collaborative work.
Contribute to community benefit, as it has been developed from real children’s concerns and interests. It seeks to address these concerns as well as empower them in solving problems and creating advice for schools.
Junior RE Matters gives Newham children a place where they can discuss spiritual and moral issues that are important to them. Every school has the opportunity to elect or send eight pupil representatives from Year 5 and a member of staff to a Junior RE one day conference. The hope is that these children will be representatives of the different religious and secular world views.
Junior RE Matters provides a place for serious discussion and debate across schools. It gives schools a way of capturing children’s thoughts and suggestions on important moral, religious and spiritual issues, and provides a ‘gifted and talented’ opportunity in RE at Key Stage 2.
In 2015 our theme will be ‘Thanksgiving', the conference day will be using Philosophy for children (P4C) to engage pupils with this theme. The children will go on to learn what different religions as well as secular world views think about special times and celebrations. It will give the children opportunities to express their thinking creatively through the use of the expressive arts.
RE Matters will co-ordinate the conference day itself for a cluster of schools. Schools already working in clusters can purchase this package collectively or RE Matters will place schools together in informal clusters.

Testimonials from teachers
It was really lovely to have the time out of my usual routine to work with all the children from the three schools on an experience which I think was so special to them and myself.
I thought that the day's activities were inspirational and presented an opportunity for all the children to reflect more deeply on their faith and how they experience and share it with others daily in real ways. The discussions were insightful and encouraged the children to explore deeper and wider issues than they would normally engage in -in class or at home.
I am sure that they all left feeling lifted.

This was the first year that I took part in this project and I would definitely book again! The children were motivated and enthusiastic about all the activities that took place and haven’t stopped talking about it since we got back. They particularly enjoyed the chance to work with other children, which they were very nervous about at first! Also, they were inspired by the creative activities and are very much looking forward to leading this event at out school. Thank you Claire for organising such a worthwhile project!

The children really enjoyed the day and were very excited to share with their classmates what they had done. I will definitely be able to deliver this in my school. I especially enjoyed the part where the children made up their own question; it involved a lot of higher level thinking which was perfect for the G and T children.
